How we research

Our process for sourcing technical claims, evaluating cooling products, handling affiliate relationships, and correcting articles.

We begin with the question, not a product list

Each guide starts with a defined reader problem: a casement window, an overheated attic, confusing portable-AC labels, or an uncertain operating cost. We identify the constraints before considering products.

Source hierarchy

We prefer primary and authoritative material:

  1. Federal regulations and guidance from DOE, EPA, FTC, and CPSC.
  2. ENERGY STAR specifications and consumer guidance.
  3. University extension and established technical organizations.
  4. Manufacturer manuals, submittal data, EnergyGuide labels, warranties, and safety notices.
  5. Retailer listings for current price and availability, never as the sole source for technical claims.

Every guide lists primary sources and the date on which the current launch research was checked. Links are not proof by themselves; claims must accurately reflect the linked material.

Product evaluation

Where a guide recommends a product or product type, we consider rated capacity, efficiency, installation fit, electrical requirements, noise documentation, controls, condensate handling, warranty, serviceability, recalls, availability, and total cost.

We distinguish documented evaluation from physical testing. We do not write “we tested” unless the publication actually obtained the product, followed a documented protocol, and can describe that protocol.

Ratings and calculations

Portable AC comparisons lead with DOE SACC rather than an unadjusted ASHRAE headline. Electricity estimates show their formula and assumptions. Room-sizing estimates state their limits and do not replace Manual J or another appropriate professional load calculation for permanent systems.

Commerce does not set the answer

Editors determine the useful options before checking which merchants offer commissions. Links may go to multiple retailers, a manufacturer, or no merchant at all. Affiliate status does not change the technical conclusion.

Corrections and updates

Specifications, recalls, regulations, and programs change. We display publication or update dates and periodically recheck commercial guides. Send a correction with a primary source to editorial@thehvachomeguide.com. Substantive corrections will be reflected in the article rather than silently defended.
